Blue River Fishing Review Colorado

This past weekend I made it up to the Blue River.   The weather was perfect, sunny day, cool breeze; fall in the Colorado mountains is spectacular.  I must admit I spent a good hour or so of the day relaxing on the bank just lying down enjoying the weather and scenery.  This time of the year you don’t run into the crowds and can find long stretches of river to yourself .  Fishing jammed into one spot of the river is not my cup of tea.  Anyone who has fished with me knows I like to hike up the river and spread my wings!

Back to the Blue, the flow has lowered and the water was crystal clear.  Stealth sight fishing was in play, but we weren’t seeing many fish.  We spent the first half of the day throwing different patterns, midges, eggs, prince nymphs, Barr's Emergers and we weren’t having any luck. The sun was out and the water was very clear so I wasn’t expecting to knock them dead, but was expecting some action.  As the day progressed on we made our way up the river and the fishing started to pick up.  The famous Blue river rainbows came out and started feeding late in the day around 5:00.  We were seeing some consistent rises but getting so late in the day decided to stick with nymphs.  We both hooked into some really nice Blue river rainbows at the end of the day.

We closed the day out with two 18-19 inch rainbows and a long day of hiking on the Blue River.  The scenery with the leaves changing, snow capped mountains and the weather made it a surreal day overall.  It was nice to cap the day with rising fish and two large rainbows.  We both hooked our fish on zug bugs, we had been swapping out midge patterns, eggs, streamers everything and were having a lot of staring fish, but no takers.  The zug ended up being our end all fly for the day.

It’s a great time of the year to get up fishing and avoid all the crowds and tourists.  The fish are still active and the fishing is still good!
